Long-duration Space Missions

Long-duration space missions refer to spaceflights that last for extended periods, typically more than six months, and involve human beings living and working in space. These missions require careful planning and preparation to ensure the health and safety of the crew, as well as the success of the mission objectives. Long-duration space missions can take place on the International Space Station (ISS), or on other spacecraft such as the planned Lunar Gateway or future missions to Mars. During these missions, crew members must deal with a range of physical and psychological challenges, including exposure to radiation, isolation, and confinement. They must also maintain the spacecraft and conduct scientific experiments, often in collaboration with researchers on Earth. Long-duration space missions are critical for advancing our understanding of space and preparing for future exploration beyond Earth's orbit.
