Leading-Edge Slats

In the context of aerospace engineering, leading-edge slats are aerodynamic surfaces on the leading edge of the wings of fixed-wing aircraft. Their main function is to modify the air flow over the wing, control lift and help prevent the wing from stalling. Slats are usually used while landing or during take off for high-lift conditions. When the aircraft is in cruising mode, the slats are retracted to reduce drag. They are extended when the aircraft is taking off or landing to increase the wing's lift coefficient. The slats work by increasing the wing's camber and delaying the separation of the boundary layer from the wing surface, which in turn increases the stall angle. This allows the aircraft to fly at slower speeds and make steeper ascents or descents. Leading-edge slats are a critical component in the design of wing systems for commercial and military aircraft.
