Instrument Landing Systems
Instrument Landing Systems (ILS) are a ground-based instrument approach system that provides precision guidance to an aircraft approaching and landing on a runway, using a combination of radio signals and, in many cases, high-intensity lighting arrays to enable a safe landing during inclement weather conditions, such as low ceilings or reduced visibility due to fog, rain, or blowing snow. The system consists of two separate components: the localizer, which provides lateral guidance; and the glide slope, which provides vertical guidance. Both components work together to create a 'pathway' in the sky that the aircraft can follow to the runway. The ILS is designed to be interoperable with a variety of aircraft systems, including autopilot systems, to provide the highest level of safety and efficiency in aircraft operations. The ILS is a critical component of modern aviation infrastructure and is used at most major airports around the world.
