Human Factors Engineering

Human Factors Engineering (HFE) is the application of knowledge about human behavior, abilities, limitations, and other characteristics to the design of equipment, systems, facilities, and jobs in order to optimize human performance, safety, and comfort. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, HFE is crucial for designing spacecraft, habitats, and equipment that are safe, efficient, and comfortable for astronauts to use. HFE principles are used to design displays, controls, and interfaces that are easy to use and understand, to optimize the layout and organization of equipment and workspaces, and to ensure that the physical and psychological demands of spaceflight are taken into account. HFE also plays a role in crew selection and training, as well as in the development of procedures and protocols for space missions.
