Eutrophication
Eutrophication is the process by which a body of water becomes overly enriched with nutrients, leading to excessive growth of algae and other aquatic plants. This can result in a depletion of oxygen in the water, which can harm or kill fish and other aquatic animals. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, eutrophication can be a concern for closed-loop life support systems, such as those used on the International Space Station. These systems rely on plants to produce oxygen and remove carbon dioxide, but if the water becomes too enriched with nutrients, it can lead to excessive plant growth and oxygen depletion. Therefore, it is important to carefully monitor nutrient levels in closed-loop life support systems to prevent eutrophication.
