Entropy Coding
Entropy coding is a data compression technique used in space and astronautical engineering to reduce the amount of data that needs to be transmitted or stored. It is based on the principle of assigning shorter codes to more frequently occurring symbols and longer codes to less frequently occurring symbols. This allows for a more efficient representation of the data, as the most common symbols can be represented with fewer bits. Entropy coding is commonly used in image and video compression, as well as in data transmission for spacecraft and satellites.
