Electrochemical Capacitors

Electrochemical capacitors, also known as supercapacitors or ultracapacitors, are energy storage devices that store electrical energy through the use of electrochemical processes. They are capable of storing much higher amounts of energy than traditional capacitors and can deliver that energy much faster than batteries. Electrochemical capacitors consist of two electrodes, an electrolyte, and a separator. When a voltage is applied, ions from the electrolyte are adsorbed onto the surface of the electrodes, creating a double layer of charge. This process is reversible, allowing for the rapid charge and discharge of the capacitor. Electrochemical capacitors have a wide range of applications in the space and astronautical engineering field, including as backup power sources for satellites and spacecraft, as well as for energy storage in electric propulsion systems.
