Dwarf Galaxies
Dwarf galaxies are small galaxies that contain a few billion stars, much less than the Milky Way's 200-400 billion stars. They are typically found orbiting larger galaxies and are important for understanding galaxy formation and evolution. Dwarf galaxies come in two main types: dwarf spheroidal galaxies, which are roughly spherical in shape and have little to no gas or ongoing star formation, and dwarf irregular galaxies, which have more irregular shapes and ongoing star formation. Studying dwarf galaxies can provide insights into the early universe, the nature of dark matter, and the processes that govern star formation in low-density environments.
