Deployable Booms

Deployable booms are extendable structures that can be compactly stowed during launch and then deployed in space to perform various functions such as supporting antennas, solar arrays, and scientific instruments. They are commonly used in spacecraft and satellites to provide structural support and to increase the distance between components. Deployable booms can be made of various materials such as composites, metals, and polymers, and can be designed to deploy in different ways such as through mechanical, pneumatic, or shape memory alloy actuation. The deployment process can be controlled through various mechanisms such as pyrotechnics, motors, or springs. Deployable booms are critical components in many space missions as they enable the spacecraft to perform its intended functions while minimizing the launch volume and mass.
