Collision Avoidance Systems
Collision Avoidance Systems (CAS) are a set of technologies and procedures designed to prevent collisions between spacecraft or between spacecraft and other objects in space. CAS includes sensors, algorithms, and communication systems that allow spacecraft to detect and track nearby objects, predict their trajectories, and take evasive actions if necessary. CAS is essential for the safety of spacecraft and crew, as collisions can cause catastrophic damage and loss of life. CAS is also important for the sustainability of space activities, as collisions can generate debris that can endanger other spacecraft and create a cascade of collisions known as the Kessler Syndrome.
