Chemical Absorption
Chemical absorption is a process in which a gas or vapor is removed from a mixture by being absorbed into a liquid. In space and astronautical engineering, chemical absorption is used in the design of life support systems to remove carbon dioxide and other harmful gases from the air in spacecraft and habitats. The process involves passing the air through a liquid absorbent, which reacts with the gas to form a stable compound that can be safely removed from the air. The liquid absorbent is then regenerated by heating or other means, releasing the gas and allowing the absorbent to be reused. Chemical absorption is a critical component of life support systems for long-duration space missions, where the recycling of air and water is essential for the survival of the crew.
