Actuation Mechanisms
Actuation mechanisms refer to the devices or systems that are responsible for controlling and manipulating the movement of spacecraft components or systems. These mechanisms are critical for the proper functioning of spacecraft, as they enable the deployment of solar arrays, antennas, and other instruments, as well as the adjustment of spacecraft attitude and trajectory. Actuation mechanisms can be classified into several categories, including electrical, mechanical, and thermal actuation systems. Electrical actuation systems use electric motors or solenoids to generate motion, while mechanical systems use gears, pulleys, and other mechanical components. Thermal actuation systems use the expansion and contraction of materials in response to temperature changes to generate motion. Actuation mechanisms must be designed to withstand the harsh conditions of space, including extreme temperatures, radiation, and vacuum conditions.
