Acoustic Insulation

Acoustic insulation is the process of reducing sound transmission from one space to another through the use of materials and techniques that absorb, block, or isolate sound waves. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, acoustic insulation is crucial for the design and construction of spacecraft, launch vehicles, and other space-related equipment. The extreme noise levels generated during launch and re-entry can cause damage to sensitive equipment and harm astronauts. Acoustic insulation materials such as foams, composites, and barriers are used to reduce the noise levels and protect the equipment and personnel. The effectiveness of acoustic insulation is measured in terms of Sound Transmission Class (STC) and Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC), which indicate the amount of sound that is blocked or absorbed by the material.
