System Reliability

In the context of aerospace engineering, system reliability refers to the probability that a system, such as a spacecraft, aircraft, or satellite, will perform its intended function without failure under specified conditions for a specified period of time. It is a critical aspect of design and maintenance in aerospace engineering, as failures can have catastrophic consequences. System reliability is determined by the reliability of individual components and their interactions. It involves the study of failure modes, effects, and criticality analysis (FMECA), which is a methodology designed to identify potential failure modes for a product or process, to assess the risk associated with those failure modes, to rank and prioritize the issues based on the risk, and to identify and carry out corrective actions to address the most serious concerns. System reliability also involves the use of redundancy, where critical systems have backup or fail-safe modes to ensure continued operation in the event of a failure.
