Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators (RTGs)
Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators (RTGs) are devices that generate electrical power by converting the heat released from the decay of radioactive isotopes into electricity using thermocouples. RTGs have been used as power sources in many space missions, including the Voyager, Pioneer, and Mars rover missions. They are preferred over other power sources in missions that require a long-lasting and reliable power supply, such as deep space missions, because they can operate for decades without maintenance. RTGs are also used in remote locations on Earth, such as in Antarctica, where solar power is not feasible due to the lack of sunlight during the winter months.
