Parity Bits

In space and astronautical engineering, parity bits are a form of error detection used in digital communication systems. A parity bit is an extra bit that is added to a binary code word to detect errors that may occur during transmission. The parity bit is set to either 0 or 1, depending on the number of 1s in the code word. If an error occurs during transmission and the number of 1s in the received code word is different from what it should be, the system can detect the error and request a retransmission of the data. Parity bits are commonly used in spacecraft communication systems to ensure the accuracy of data transmitted over long distances.
