Galileo Satellite Navigation Systems

Galileo Satellite Navigation Systems refer to a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) that is developed by the European Union (EU) in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA). It is designed to provide a highly accurate global positioning service under civilian control, offering guaranteed global coverage. The system is named after the Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei. It consists of 30 satellites (27 operational and 3 active spares), positioned in three circular Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) planes. The main services offered by Galileo include the Open Service, Commercial Service, Public Regulated Service, and Search and Rescue Service. The Galileo system is interoperable with GPS and GLONASS, the two other GNSS systems. The main purpose of the Galileo system is to provide Europe with its own independent high-precision positioning system so European nations do not have to rely on the American GPS, or the Russian GLONASS systems, which could be disabled or degraded by their operators at any time.
