Flight Information Service
Flight Information Service (FIS) is a service provided by air traffic control (ATC) that provides pilots with information that is relevant to the safe and efficient conduct of flights. FIS includes information on weather, airspace restrictions, and other operational information. FIS is available to all pilots, regardless of whether they are operating under instrument flight rules (IFR) or visual flight rules (VFR). The information provided by FIS is intended to supplement, not replace, a pilot's own pre-flight planning and decision-making process. FIS is particularly useful for VFR pilots who may not have access to the same level of information as IFR pilots. FIS is provided by ATC facilities on a continuous basis, and pilots can request FIS at any time during a flight.
