Convolutional Coding
Convolutional coding is a technique used in digital communication systems to improve the reliability of data transmission over noisy channels. It involves encoding the input data stream into a longer output stream by convolving the input bits with a set of pre-defined shift registers. The resulting encoded stream has redundancy built into it, which allows the receiver to detect and correct errors that may have occurred during transmission. Convolutional coding is widely used in satellite and deep space communication systems, where the channel conditions are highly variable and error-prone. The most common types of convolutional codes are the rate 1/2 and rate 1/3 codes, which provide good error correction performance while minimizing the increase in data rate.
