Seafloor Spreading

Seafloor spreading is a geological process that occurs at the mid-ocean ridges, where new oceanic crust is formed through volcanic activity and then gradually moves away from the ridge crest. As magma rises to the surface, it cools and solidifies, creating new crust that is added to the edges of the plates. This process is driven by convection currents in the mantle, which cause the plates to move apart. Seafloor spreading is a key component of plate tectonics, the theory that explains the movement of the Earth's lithosphere. It is also responsible for the creation of new ocean basins and the widening of existing ones.
