Internet Control Message Protocol

Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) is a network protocol used to send error messages and operational information about network conditions. It is an integral part of the Internet Protocol (IP) suite and is used by network devices, including routers, to send error messages indicating, for example, that a requested service is not available or that a host or router could not be reached. ICMP messages are also used to diagnose network problems, such as when a packet is lost or when a router is congested. ICMP messages are typically generated automatically by network devices, but they can also be generated manually using diagnostic tools. ICMP is a critical component of network troubleshooting and is used extensively by network administrators to diagnose and resolve network issues.
