Global Maritime Distress Safety System
In the context of aerospace engineering, the Global Maritime Distress Safety System (GMDSS) is a set of safety procedures, types of equipment, and communication protocols that are used to increase safety and make it easier to rescue distressed ships, boats and aircraft. GMDSS consists of several systems, some of which are new, but many of which have been in operation for many years. The system is intended to perform distress alerting, ship-to-shore and shore-to-ship communication, ship-to-ship communication, and on-scene communication. It also provides general communications supporting the maritime distress and safety communication. In aerospace context, it is crucial for aircrafts flying over water as it allows them to communicate with maritime vessels in case of an emergency. It is an internationally agreed-upon set of safety procedures, types of equipment, and communication protocols used to increase safety and facilitate navigation.
