Apollo 13

Apollo 13 was the seventh manned mission in the Apollo space program and the third intended to land on the Moon. The mission was launched on April 11, 1970, but the lunar landing was aborted after an oxygen tank in the service module (SM) failed two days into the mission. The crew instead looped around the Moon, and returned safely to Earth on April 17, 1970. The mission is considered a successful failure because of the way the crew and ground-based mission control worked together to solve the life-threatening problems they encountered. The mission helped to develop new procedures for dealing with similar emergencies in space, and it demonstrated the importance of careful planning and preparation.
