Continental Drift

Continental drift is the theory that the Earth's continents have moved over geologic time relative to each other, thus appearing to have 'drifted' across the ocean bed. This theory was first proposed by Alfred Wegener in 1912 and was later supported by evidence from paleomagnetism, geology, and the study of ocean floor spreading. The theory suggests that the continents were once joined together in a single landmass called Pangaea, which began to break apart about 200 million years ago. The movement of the continents is believed to be driven by the motion of tectonic plates, which are large pieces of the Earth's crust that float on the underlying mantle. Continental drift has had a significant impact on the evolution of life on Earth, as it has influenced the distribution of plants and animals across the globe.
